Veterans' Benefits

Including GI Bill® benefits, CalVet fee waivers, Joint Service Transcript (JST) or Airforce ACE transcript submission, and tuition assistance.

Reach out to your Veterans Resource Center (VRC) School Certifying Official (SCO) to get help with your your VA benefits enrollment steps.

Application, Assessment, Evaluation & Registration Support for Veteran Resource Center (VRC) Students

  • Always be sure to include your full name, student ID number (CWID), and how we can assist you with any of the new student STEPS. 
    • If you're having registration issues, please also include the 5-digit course registration number (CRN) of the class you are trying to add or drop. 

New VRC Student STEPS (Application to Registration)

STEP 1: Complete Online De Anza Application

    • The VRC has student computers, and we can help you complete the online application. You will need an email account to complete the application. 
    • Upon successful completion of the online application, you will receive a "Welcome to De Anza" email within 7 - 10 days. This email will contain your De Anza student ID number, also known as your Campus Wide ID (CWID).
      • De Anza's Admissions & Records team may reach out to you via email (daapplications@deanza.edu) if they need more information from you. Please monitor your email. 
    • If you do not attend one primary quarter (Fall, Winter or Spring), you will need to reapply to De Anza.  

STEP 2: Once you've completed STEP 1, you'll be eligible for a Priority Registration group. 

    • Your registration date and time will populate in MyPortal > Student Registration App > Get Date to Register about 3 - 4 weeks before registration for the quarter begins.
    • Connect with the VRC
      • New students studying with their VA educational benefits should receive priority registeration once your certifying official has received your quarterly cerification form.
      • New students who are on active duty, dependants or veterans that are not using VA educational benefits should plan follow these steps.
      • Need help? Email veteransda@deanza.edu with your full name and CWID if you have not received priority registration. 
    • Quarterly registration dates, quarter start and end dates, and other important deadlines are listed in the online Academic Calendar

STEP 3A: Review your English (or ESL) and Math course placements; Consider the Science Exam, if needed.

    • Most educational goals require new students to satisfy an English (or ESL) and math course requirement.
    • At De Anza, new students will receive an English (or ESL) and Math course placement by the Assessment process. 
    • If you need to take CHEM 1A, BIOL 6A or BIOL 40A for your educational goal, and you feel that your chemistry and biology knowledge, skills and abilities are proficient and you'd like to attempt the Science Exam, connect with your VRC counselor for next steps. 

STEP 3B: Review any Previous College Course Credit, have any College Transcripts Evaluated, and Clearing Prerequisites with your VRC Counselor

    • If you attended an accredited college or university in the United States, you should plan to bring a copy of your transcript to your VRC counseling appointment
    • At your appointment, your VRC counselor will help you to
      • Complete a prerequisite clearance form for any courses you may have already completed at another college.
      • Order your official transcripts and send them to De Anza's Evaluations Department for evaluation.
        • Its important that you complete this step with a VRC counselor, so that we can help you to track the status of your transcript evaulation request.
      • Develop an educational plan in DegreeWorks and choose the approriate courses for your educational goal, major, and Chapter benefits, as appropriate.

STEP 4: With your quarterly education plan created by your VRC counselor, register for your classes!

    • Registration Guide
    • Your registration date and time allows you to begin adding classes online. You can add classes up until the start of the class.
    • If a class is full and the instructor offers a waitlist, you may add yourself to the waitlst. 
    • Once a class has its first class meeting, you must get an add code from the instructor. An add code is the instructor's permission to add their class late. Only the instructor can issue an add code. 
    • ProTips!
      • Read the Footnotes for each class that you're intererested in taking. The Footnotes will describe any special registration steps that you need to take before you attempt to register for the class. 
      • Do not select a Pass/No Pass grade option without first talking with your VRC counselor
      • Deviating from your VRC counselor created education plan can negatively impact your educational benefits. Meet with your VRC counselor before adding or dropping a class. 

Counseling and Advising

Including personal (emergency support for your basic needs), career and academic counseling (academic renewal, academic probation, assistance with UC/CSU, private applications, applying for local De Anza degrees/certificates and graduation, etc.), referrals to support services, and more! You should plan to meet with your VRC counselor at least one time each quarter
