If you are on academic or progress notice, you will have a registration hold placed on your student account. This will prevent you from registering for next quarter – and from obtaining certificates, degrees or transcripts – until you meet with a counselor and complete other required steps as described on this webpage.

If you're on academic or progress notice for more than one quarter, you may also lose your priority registration status.

Important Information About Financial Aid and GI Benefits

If you are on academic or progress notice for more than one quarter, you could lose eligibility for certain types of financial aid or GI benefits. Contact the Financial Aid or Veteran Services office for more information.

Your Academic Status

Academic Notice Standards

You can be placed on academic notice if you have taken at least 18 units at De Anza and your cumulative GPA (grade point average) is below 2.0.

At that point, you will be notified by email and you will have a registration hold placed on your student account. This hold will prevent you from registering for next quarter and you won't be able to obtain your degree, certificate or transcript until it's removed.
In order to have the hold removed from your account, you must complete the required steps listed below, which are intended to help you improve your academic performance.
An initial period of notice lasts for one quarter. After that, you will be taken off notice if you have increased your cumulative GPA to at least 2.0.
If you're on academic notice for more than one quarter, you may lose your priority registration status.

Pause Status

If your GPA for a quarter is below 2.0 and your cumulative GPA has been below 2.0 for five quarters – the quarters don't have to be consecutive – you can be placed on pause status for the next quarter.
If you are on pause status, you may be dropped from classes and required to sit out for a quarter.

Progress Notice Standards

You will be placed on progress notice if you have enrolled in at least 18 units at De Anza and your course grades are W (Withdrawn), I (Incomplete) or NP (No Pass) for at least half of the units you've attempted. This means you will have completed less than 51% of the units for all courses in which you have enrolled at De Anza.

At that point, you will be notified by email and you will have a registration hold placed on your student account. This hold will prevent you from registering for next quarter and you won't be able to obtain your degree, certificate or transcript until it's removed.
In order to have the hold removed from your account, you must complete the required steps listed below, which are intended to help you improve your academic progress.

Required Steps for Moving Off Notice

Students on all levels of academic or progress notice are required to meet with an academic counselor.

If you are part of a program that has its own academic counselors, please contact the counselor for your program. You'll find how to reach them by visiting the Our Counselors webpage.
If you are not a part of a program that has its own academic counselors, please contact the Academic Awareness Program team. You will be partnered with an Academic Awareness Counselor and a Student Support Specialist to assist you in regaining good academic standing and getting back on track to reach your goals.

FAQs and Answers

How can I drop a class if there's a notice hold on my student account?
You can still drop a class (before the drop deadline) if you have an academic or progress notice hold on your account.

Here's what you need to do:
1. Log in to MyPortal
2. Locate the card for Adobe Sign Student Forms
3. Click on Forms and Workflows
4. Open the form called De Anza ADD/DROP/WITHDRAWAL Request Form
5. Complete the form and submit it online
How can I have an academic or progress notice hold removed?
What should I do if I'm on pause status?
If you've been placed on academic or progress pause status, you must meet with a counselor and submit a petition to the Appeal Review Committee (ARC). Here's what you need to do:
1. Schedule a meeting with an academic counselor
2. Before your meeting, log in to MyPortal
3. Open the Apps page and click on the tile for Adobe Sign Student Forms
4. Open the form called De Anza Petition to the ARC for Admission After Dismissal
5. Gather the information you need to complete the form
6. When you meet with a counselor, you can complete the form and have the counselor sign it. (A counselor's signature is required.)
7. Submit the form to the ARC
8. The ARC will notify you of their decision. (It may take at least seven business days for the ARC to review your petition.)
What if I've been away from college for one or more quarters?
Welcome back! We're glad you are returning to De Anza. Here are the steps to follow if you didn't take courses here last quarter. (This doesn't apply if you only took the summer off.)
- You must submit a new application for admission. It's easy – just follow the steps to Apply and Register.
- If you were on academic or progress notice (formerly probation) when you last attended, you'll also need to contact the Academic Awareness Program to have your registration hold lifted
- Then you can go ahead and register for classes.

When do I get off academic or progress notice?

Academic notice: You can move off academic notice by raising your cumulative GPA to 2.0 or higher.

Progress notice: You can move off progress notice by raising your cumulative course completion rate (for all courses you've taken at De Anza) to at least 51%. You can do this by passing your classes and avoiding grades of W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete), or NP (No Pass).
Will notice affect my financial aid or GI benefits?
