Students who are on academic or progress notice should contact their counselor for guidance on returning to good academic standing.
Academic Notice
Students are placed on academic notice for an initial quarter if they have enrolled in at least 18 quarter units and their cumulative GPA is 1.99 or lower.
Students will remain on academic notice in subsequent quarters (excluding summer) if their cumulative GPA continues to be 1.99 or lower.
- Students will remain at the same level of academic notice if their cumulative GPA continues to be 1.99 or lower, but their term GPA (for grades earned during the quarter they are on notice) is above 1.99.
- The student will advance to the next level of academic notice in each subsequent quarter if their term GPA (for grades earned during the quarter in which they are on notice) is 1.99 or lower.
Progress Notice
Students are placed on progress notice for an initial quarter if they have enrolled in at least 18 quarter units and received grades of W (Withdrawal), I (Incomplete) or NP (No Pass) in 50% or more of the units taken.
Students will remain on progress notice in subsequent quarters (excluding summer) if their cumulative percentage of W, I or NP grades continues to be 50% or more of their attempted units.
- Students will remain on the same level of progress notice if their cumulative percentage of W, I or NP grades continues to be 50% or more, but they begin to receive letter grades or pass at least one course in the quarter they are on progress notice.
- Students will advance to the next level of progress notice in each subsequent quarter if they do not receive any letter grades or pass any course.
Eligibility for Aid, Services or Campus Programs
Students who have a cumulative GPA of 1.99 or lower for two or more quarters, or have a cumulative completion rate below 67% for two or more quarters, may become ineligible for certain types of financial aid, veteran's benefits or participation in campus programs. For more information, contact the Financial Aid Office, Veterans Resource Center or your counselor.
Dismissal
A student on academic notice is subject to dismissal if the student’s cumulative GPA falls below 2.0 for all units attempted in each of five consecutive quarters.
A student on progress notice is subject to dismissal if the student receives a grade of W, I, NP or NC for 50% or more of the units enrolled in at least five consecutive quarters.
Academic Reinstatement (Readmission After Dismissal)
The Board of Trustees for the Foothill-De Anza district has established procedures under state law for students to petition for reinstatement to De Anza College. Students must submit a new application for admission and meet with a counselor to review their academic goals and other matters relevant to a successful educational experience.
If a counselor recommends approval, the petition must be submitted to the Appeal Review Committee. Students who petition for reinstatement must describe their educational goals, the courses they wish to take in a specific quarter and the factors that have changed which now cause them to expect success. Learn more about the Appeal Review Committee.
Attending De Anza and Foothill College
The academic and progress notice system at De Anza College might not accurately reflect the correct status for students who have enrolled at both De Anza and Foothill College. Students who are enrolled at both colleges during the same quarter, or have an academic history with both colleges, should contact their designated De Anza counselor or the Academic Awareness Program at De Anza for assistance regarding their academic or progress notice status.
Students who take classes at both De Anza and Foothill are responsible for keeping track of their grades to ensure that they remain in good standing at each college. It is possible to be in good standing at Foothill while still being placed on academic or progress notice — or subject to dismissal — at De Anza if academic performance falls below the required standards.
