Marcel Macedo de Castro Lima
Part-Time Faculty Instruct
Marcel Castro-Lima (he/him) is a Brazilian composer and conductor based
in San Francisco/USA. Castro-Lima’s music is deeply rooted in Brazilian
popular traditions, which he incorporates seamlessly into experimental
practices involving generative music, intermedia, and electronics. He
holds a Ph.D. in creative processes in music from UNIRIO (Rio de
Janeiro) and a Ph.D. in composition and new media at the University of
North Texas. Dr. Castro-Lima’s music has been performed in Brazil and
the US by groups like Ensemble Dal Niente, Splice Ensemble, Hypercube,
Julius Quartet, Dallas Symphony Orchestra Chamber Players, Fort Worth
Symphony, Goiás Philharmonic Orchestra, and UFRJ Symphony Orchestra. His
orchestral music has been awarded prizes like the OPUS 1, promoted by
Goiás Philharmonic, and the National Composition Contest by UFRJ.

Jay Jordana
As a professional musician in the Bay Area, Jay has done and continues to do ensemble and solo work, directing, composing, teaching, and concert production. Working with ensembles, she became the assistant director and lead soprano to Downbeat Magazine’s Best Collegiate Vocal Jazz Ensemble Vocal Flight for two consecutive years. Shortly thereafter, Jay sang lead soprano with two-award winning a cappella groups +4db and SoVoSo. In her solo work, Jay sang in the soundtrack of Joel Mendias’ short film “I” and was commissioned to write the De Anza College Jingle that was broadcast in radio stations throughout the Bay Area. Working with numerous organizations, Jay sang in Opera San Jose's production of Carmen and served as the assistant conductor to Barbara Day Turner's San Jose Chamber Orchestra. While completing her Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance with Erie Mills at San Jose State University, Jay studied choral conducting with Dr. Charlene Archibeque where she was assistant conductor to the concert choir and the Choraliers. Awarded a scholarship by the Northern California Association of Kodály Educators, Jay completed Levels I and II Kodály training from Holy Names University. She also successfully completed all the training sessions from The Contemporary Commercial Music Vocal Pedagogy Institute at Shenandoah University. And finally, Jay completed a Master of Arts in Music Education from San Jose State University. As an educator, Jay served as a fellow with the California Music Project assisting music teachers in low-income schools. Working with the Alum Rock Jazz Band, her students were chosen by the Oakland Raiders organization to perform the national anthem. Jay also worked with Vivace Youth Chorus as an Associate Conductor where she directed their Adagio, Andante, and A cappella ensembles. As an active member of the Bay Area arts community, Jay served as the President of the Silicon Valley Arts Coalition and Artistic Director and Founder of the Foothill Community Concert Series. Currently, Jay teaches music at Basis Independent Silicon Valley, De Anza College, and is the Director of Music at First Congregational Church of San Jose where she and her team host the Concerts on the Corner Concert Series.
Grace Lai
Part-Time Faculty Instructor, Instrumental Music Director, Concert Band
Dr. Grace Lai is a distinguished flutist, conductor, and educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. She currently teaches at De Anza College, where she offers courses in Comprehensive Musicianship, Music Fundamentals, Music Appreciation, Chamber Orchestra, Concert Band, and Conducting. In addition to her work at De Anza, she serves as the Flute Instructor at Los Positas College and La Honda Music Camp. Dr. Lai has also served as the Instrumental Ensemble Director at De Anza College, Associate Director of the Fremont Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a music instructor with the Fremont Education Foundation.
As a performer, Dr. Lai has appeared with ensembles such as the San Francisco Wind Ensemble, Modesto Opera, and the Fremont Symphony Orchestra. She was invited to perform with the Chicago-based contemporary music ensemble Fifth House in a live radio broadcast of the Rush Hour Concerts at St. James Cathedral and at the Ravinia Festival. She has also performed with the Grammy Award-winning ensemble Eighth Blackbird. Her dedication to new music has led to close collaborations with composers including Chen Yi, Zhou Long, Chingju Shih, and Asha Srinivasan, and she has premiered and commissioned numerous works. Her festival appearances include the James Tenney Festival, Elliott Carter Festival, University of Central Missouri New Music Festival, ArtSounds, and the Fresh Inc Festival.

Jordan Mitchell
Part-Time Faculty Instructor
Jordan D. Mitchell is a
multifaceted musician, composer, and educator whose work bridges
performance, scholarship, and socio-political consciousness. He holds a
Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition & Minor in Education from
University of California, Santa Barbara and earned his Master’s of Music
in Music Education with an Emphasis on Composition from University of Southern California. A mentee of Victor Womack, Diane Fujino & Ronald C. McCurdy where
his research and creative work focused on composition techniques of
Afro-Latin Jazz, Mariachi, Cool Jazz, & Music education as a tool
for restorative juvenile justice. As a professor, Mitchell is recognized
for his innovative and inclusive approach to music education,
integrating traditional theory with contemporary practices and
culturally responsive pedagogy. As a performer and composer, his
genre-defying work spans jazz, classical, hip-hop, mariachi and
experimental music, often emphasizing narrative, identity, and the
exploration of sonic landscapes.
James Schneider

Pianist, woodwind player and composer Jim
Schneider is a Bay Area native who has
performed, recorded, and taught jazz in the Bay
Area for several years. He has performed with
ensembles and artists such as Viva Brasil,
Claudia Gomez, Ed Johnson, the late Smith
Dobson, Pan Caribe, and many more. Jim's
teaching experience includes 25 years of Jazz
Piano at De Anza college as well as Jazz
Improvisation, Jazz Ensemble, and other courses
at De Anza and Gavilan colleges.
Benett Zussman

Guitarist/Composer/Educator Benett Zussman earned his Master’s degree in
Improvised Music with an emphasis on Jazz and Flamenco guitar from San Jose State
University. His BA is in Classical Guitar Performance under the guidance of the late,
Cuban classical guitarist Maestro José Rey de la Torre.
From 1990-2000 Benett taught at the Community School of Music and Arts in Mountain
View, CA. where he created and directed the CSMA Rock and Blues ensemble. A Bay
Area native, Ben served on the board of the South Bay Guitar Society where he has
been a featured soloist, clinician and educator. Through the City of San José’s Office of
Cultural Affairs school outreach programs Ben has performed in numerous High
Schools with The South Bay Guitar Society Duo, “Ben and Jerry” and the SBGS Quartet
from 2012-2020.
In 2006 Ben released his first recording, Roundtrip, a collection of new works,
arrangements and compositions for solo guitar. On this project he discovered the
powerful world of Pro Tools and computers in music, and since 2018 teaches Electronic
Music at De Anza College as well as Music Appreciation and Beginning, Intermediate
and Advanced Guitar courses.
In addition to concerts, outreach programs and clinics, Ben also performs solo or
ensemble special events like weddings, corporate and private parties. Rounding out
Ben’s teaching career is his active teaching studio at The Los Gatos School of Music
(formally Joplin and Sweeney Music) celebrating over thirty years at that location.
