    & Proposed 23-24 Budget

So Kam Lee presented the Senate 2022-2023 financial report and a proposed budget for 2023-2024. The Senate will vote to confirm the report and approve the budget in the next meeting.

There were suggestions for additional budget items like outreach, mentoring program, and compensation for part-time representatives. Senators should email the officers with more ideas for the budget.

Resolution on the Implementation of California Assembly Bill 811

California Assembly Bill 811 will allow De Anza students to repeat courses they've successfully passed in arts, humanities, kinesiology, foreign languages, and English as a second language. Students may retake these classes for enrichment or skill-building purposes.

The bill recognizes the importance of continuous learning and provides students with the means to conquer their fears and develop proficiency at their own pace. It gives learners the ability to revisit classes in support of fostering career advancement and personal growth.

The bill has passed through the State Assembly and Senate. It is now on the governor’s desk for signature.

The resolution urges for a timely implementation of the bill once it is signed and takes effect. The De Anza Academic Senate will work with administration to establish or update all policies related to repeatability and do other necessary work to put AB811 into effect for the college as soon as legally possible.

Mary Donahue motioned, Dawnis Guevara seconded to pass the resolution on the first reading.

Mary Pape questioned the reason for putting aside the normal process.

The normal process requires 2 readings. This provides  representatives at least one week to communicate and get feedback from their constituents.

Christina Espinosa-Pieb: It will not change anything for us administratively. With or without a resolution, we are already working on it. They are enthusiastic about the bill and its benefits for students and the college.

Mary Donahue: The intent of the resolution is to get the word out there.

    Yes 2, No 14, Abstention 2.

Motion did not pass at the first reading. The Senate will follow its normal process and will vote on it after the 2nd reading.

Academic Senate Goals and Priorities for 2023-2024

Senate members engaged in a discussion summarized in the following Jamboard that will remain open for further input for at least 10 more days. They will help frame future Senate discussions.
