Quick Notes for the Week of Dec. 2
President Search Completed
Omar Torres Selected as President
Chancellor Lee Lambert has selected Omar Torres, assistant superintendent at College of the Canyons, to become De Anza’s next president in January, pending approval by the Foothill-De Anza district Board of Trustees. Torres has more than two decades of California community college experience, including nine years of holding part-time and full-time faculty positions.
Torres has led the California Community Colleges Chief Instructional Officers (CCCCIO) and served on the CCC Curriculum Committee, Consultation Council and the Community College League of California’s Advisory Committee on Legislation. He has also overseen the initiation of new career technical education and apprenticeship programs and a significant expansion of dual enrollment and noncredit courses and partnerships.
In announcing his selection, Chancellor Lambert said he and others were impressed with Torres’ “passion and enthusiasm as well as his commitment to equity and student success.”
Torres will begin his new role on Jan. 3, pending board approval on Dec. 16. Learn more about Torres by reading the chancellor’s announcement at deanza.edu/president-search/.
Football Team Undefeated in Regular Season
D'Agostino Selected as League Coach of the Year
De Anza’s football team has finished its best regular season in recent history, after three consecutive comeback victories.
The Mountain Lions ended the season at home on Nov. 23, defeating Chabot College 26-24 on the final play of the game. They will go on to meet Monterey Peninsula College on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Northern California Football Conference American Division championship.
Coach Joe D’Agostino was voted PAC-7 Coach of the Year by his peers in the region. Under D’Agostino’s leadership, the football team produced 16 all-league student-athletes – including Offensive Most Valuable Player sophomore quarterback Antevious Jackson.
The Mountain Lions were also represented last month at the Community College League of California’s annual convention, where D’Agostino and Physical Education and Athletics Dean Eric Mendoza gave a workshop presentation on De Anza’s FAST (Football Academic Success Team) program, which supports student-athletes in reaching their academic goals.
