Disability Justice Events Begin Today

Office of Equity logoLearn more about disability support, justice and allyship at multiple events this month. The events, which start today and run through March, explore different resources at De Anza, showcase student voices and provide the history of important topics relating to disability. This series is supported by the Office of Equity, Association of Classified Employees (ACE), Disability Support Programs and Services, Pride Center, DASG and Office of College Life. Black History Month Closing Ceremony Is Tomorrow

BFSA logoThe Black Faculty, Staff and Administrators (BFSA) Network’s Black History Month Closing Ceremony is tomorrow, Feb. 27, from noon-1 p.m. in Conference Rooms A & B! Celebrate the arts with teacher and poet Danee “Queen D” Black, an artist from Sacramento. Refreshments will be provided. Find more information on the college events calendar.

Sandra Diaz Health Professions Roundtable

nurse holding patient's handThe fourth annual Sandra Diaz Health Professions Roundtable will take place Wednesday, March 6, from 6-7:30 p.m. in MLC 255 and over Zoom. The Diversity Health Care and Engagement Committee presents the panel in memory of nursing instructor Sandra Diaz to encourage students towards a career in health care.

The event features panelists from a variety of nursing careers, including Yessica Xitlalic Riles, labor and delivery nurse; Daniela Vargas, co-chair of the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing; PeelGadol Ben Yisrael, De Anza nursing student; and Rosafel Nogra, clinic director of De Anza Student Health Services. Celebrate Nowruz and Arrival of Spring

wheatgrass and colored eggs and candlesEveryone’s invited to a celebration of Nowruz – marking the arrival of spring and a new year for millions of people around the world – at a special event hosted by International Student Programs on Monday, March 11.

There will be traditional snacks, music, costumes and fun at this event, from noon to 3 p.m. in Conference Rooms A&B of the Campus Center. Find more information and sign up to attend at deanza.edu/international/nowruz.

Highlights

De Anza Advances in Aspen Contest

Aspen Prize Top 150 2025De Anza College has advanced to the next stage in a prestigious national competition sponsored by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program, which has invited President Lloyd Holmes to take part in a leadership interview in early March. Last fall, the program named De Anza as one of the nation's top 150 community colleges, which were then eligible to enter a $1 million contest on the basis of college performance in teaching, learning, equity and other factors.

The Aspen Institute program will consider results from the leadership interview along with a detailed application and data submitted by the college, before naming 25 semifinalists for the contest in April.

English Instructor Publishes New Book

One Creative Writing Prompt a DayEnglish instructor Lita Kurth has a new book for aspiring writers and anyone who wants to unlock their inner storytelling abilities. “One Creative Writing Prompt a Day” provides a year’s worth of daily prompts designed to boost creativity as well as sharpen basic writing skills, including description, exposition, narration, dialogue, plot and more.

Kurth, who teaches creative writing at De Anza, has honed her own technique by writing fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. Her new book is published by Callisto and distributed by Simon and Schuster.

New CAN/DID Videos

Micah RudinThe Office of Communications is celebrating Black History Month by releasing new videos for the CAN/DID Inclusion Series – an ongoing multimedia project that builds on the knowledge and experience of De Anza College students, faculty members and classified professionals.

Check out the videos posted last week, which feature students, faculty members and educator Joe Canton discussing the importance of Black history and heritage. Stay tuned for more videos.
