Grassroots Democracy: Social Movements Since the 1960s
Course Description
This course offers both applied and theoretical learning for students of social justice, serving as a comparative survey of protest movements since the 1960s. It provides an introductory, comparative, and interdisciplinary study of social and political struggles among Mexican American, African American, Asian American, and white working-class communities from 1960 to the present day. Throughout the course, there is a focus on tracing the development of these protest movements in response to various forms of inequality, including racial, class, gender, ecological, and political disparities within the context of U.S. politics and history. Moreover, the course critically examines both internal and external factors contributing to the rise and fall of social and political movements. Special attention is given to the intersectionality of ecology, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, class, and sexual orientation within contemporary U.S. politics.
