About Online-U

Online-U consists of a series of workshops designed to help faculty learn how to effectively teach online or hybrid courses using Canvas. The workshops serve faculty who:

  • are Canvas Certified and have, at minimum, used Canvas to supplement their face-to-face courses for at least two terms;
  • are interested in teaching a hybrid or online course for their department;
  • are developing an online or hybrid course that already has curriculum approval to be taught in that delivery format.

Faculty who have taught online but have primarily used Publisher Content for their courses may also want to participate.

Online-U runs twice a year: January - June OR  July - December. Workshops are delivered in-person and online, with moderated self-paced work required.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Create accessible Canvas pages, Word documents and Presentations
  • Organize course content in modules in a manner that best helps students succeed
  • Design with an equity lens
  • Incorporate substantive interaction
  • Utilize Canvas features to increase success and retention while maintaining academic integrity
  • Align coursework with student learning outcomes
  • Create engaging video
  • Effectively facilitate online office hours
  • Create engaging assignments that foster a strong sense of community in the online environment

Participants who complete the program are eligible to receive paid attendance at the Online Teaching Conference or equivalent conference that focuses on Online Education, Online Teaching or Online Pedagogy. Participants are also eligible for up to 3 PGA Units.
