Writing is communicating and rewriting is an honest effort to make your message more clear, more articulate, and better supported with illustrations and examples. It is the difference between a quick, pencil sketch and a dynamic, colorful, carefully-crafted painting, between the "news" and insightful, well-supported commentary. Look upon rewriting not as a chore, as something distasteful, but as an opportunity to sharpen your mind and message, to increase your facility to communicate with the world. Before you rewrite a paper, read and consider my comments carefully and set up a meeting to discuss your revision plans. In addition, use the following questions to help you consider how you can strengthen organization, development, focus, sentence structure, and other areas of your paper. If you look critically at these guidelines and include them in your paper, you will write a successful essay.) Self Evaluation Questions: 1. What are the strengths of my paper? 2. What areas of my paper need improvement, if any? What questions do I have with what I'm trying to do? Audience, Purpose, Thesis: 3. What's the most important thing I want to say about my subject? Why do I think the subject is worth writing about? 4. As I read my paper, have I supported my thesis, or digressed? Is the thesis too broad or too narrow? 5. What would my reader want to know about the subject? Have I adequately described or summarized the context or the background of the paper, so that even a reader who knows nothing about the subject would be able to understand the purpose of the paper? Organization: 6. How many specific points do I make about my subject? Did I overlap or repeat my points? Did I leave out any points or add some that aren't relevant to the main idea? 7. Why did I talk about the points in this order? Should the order be changed? 8. How did I get from one point to the next? What signposts did I give the reader? Paragraph Focus and Development (ask these questions of every paragraph): 9. What job is this paragraph supposed to do? How does it relate to the paragraphs before and after it? 10. What is the topic idea/sentence for this paragraph? Will my reader have trouble finding it? 11. Did I develop the topic idea well? Can I substitute better examples, reasons, or details? Do I need to provide additional facts or information? 12. Do I give reasons for my position in the paragraph? Are those reasons supported Questions for Revision (continued) with relevant examples? 13. How well does the paragraph hold together? How many levels of generality does it have? Are the sentences varied? Do I need transitions? When I read a paragraph out loud, does it flow smoothly? 14. Did you explain/interpret/analyze the support you include? Do you explain what you've learned? Have you included the "E" ? Sentences (ask these questions of every sentence): 14. Can my reader "see" what I am saying? What livelier and more specific words could I substitute for people, things, or commonly overused words like this/that, there, be/is/are, and so on? 15. Can I combine this sentence with another one? 16. Is this sentence "fat?" Example: Original: I think that all I can usefully say right now on this point is that in the normal course of their professional activities social anthropologists are usually concerned with the third of these alternatives, while the other two levels are treated as raw data for analysis. Revised: Social anthropologists usually concentrate on the third alternative, treating the other two as raw data. (Lard factor = 66%) Things to Check Last: 17. How does my paper end? Did I keep the promises I made to my reader at the beginning of the paper? 18. When I read the assignment again, did I miss anything? 19. Did I check spelling, punctuation, grammar? What kinds of errors do I usually have? What errors did I have in my last paper? 20. What do I like best about this paper? What do I need to work on in the next paper?
