SYLLABUS PART 2

Grades based on following activities and point values. See notes at bottom. Please submit your selections from the menu below no later than next Tuesday. In writing or by email.

100 pts = 100% = A+

 

A         CREATE AN ART OBJECT

0-30 PTS POSSIBLE. REQUIRED OF ALL STUDENTS

The work, a reflection or expression of who you are or your interests must incorporate salvaged and/or found materials and it must include a light source (battery or plug in). Object may also include handmade or hand altered elements.

 

Objective: Apply your understanding of design and compositional values to create an object that is uniquely you. Effort to be imaginative, creative, original, thoughtful, and personal rather than merely efficient. Effort at quality crafting rather than quick and sloppy. Re-use and recycle valued over monetary expense. Must be safe, non-toxic, and not hazardous in its use or application. (If funds are a concern, instructor will provide a limited number of light sources for our exhibit day "reception." Please give minimum 1 week advance notice.)

 

B         MUSEUM ANALYSIS PAPER: 4 pages

0-30 PTS POSSIBLE. REQUIRED OF ALL STUDENTS

A structured assignment based on a visit to

San Jose Museum of Art (Market St at San Fernando, downtown San Jose) OR Cantor Center for Arts (Stanford  University campus, Palo Alto)

Visit assigned galleries, select an object for in depth interpretation. See assignment for details.

All students will submit paper for peer review prior to final submission.

 

C         Choose from the following options to achieve total of 100 or more points:

 

FOR 0-20 POINTS

1          Short research paper (3 p) or class presentation on specific historical work of art (from 19th century or earlier) or cultural object of art. Preference for your own cultural or ethnic background. Minimum 3 sources.

 

2          Conduct a 30 minute museum tour for 4-6 friends/family members/colleagues. To include your preparation notes, presentation notes, audience feedback forms, self evaluation.

 

3          Curate a themed exhibit to include 10 works of art, curator's introduction to exhibit, floor plan, wall labels. Present to class or audio recording of your introduction and tour of the exhibit. 3 specific works should be discussed in more detail. 7 other works can be more cursory but you must explain how/why you selected them. Paper or presentation. 15 min

 

4          Group presentation based on research on artist, topic or theme, by 4 people. Everyone must present. Everyone gets same grade. Minimum 3 sources.  25 min, incl. Q&A.

 


FOR 0-10 POINTS

1          Response Papers dealing with interpretation: 1.5-2 pages

Art on campus as assigned, In-Class videos

 

2          In-class observation exercises (usually some kind of drawing). 3 different assignments, according to instructions.

 

3          Quizzes on key terms and meanings, formal elements, media, possibly one more. Quizzes start at beginning of class. They cannot be made up if late or absent for any reason.

 

NOTES:

*Each of the items mentioned above has specific "parameters" or set of expectations which will be posted on website and/or distributed in class.

*All topics/subjects/artists for papers and presentation must be submitted in writing for approval and to avoid repetition by me or other students.

-Last request for approval: end of week 2. Submit in class or via email asap so you can start working.

-No approval will be granted on verbal only requests, but I am available to discuss with you before or after class to help you identify topics etc.

-Be very specific in your proposal or you will delay the process because I ask for re-submission for more info.

AFTER YOU GET APPROVAL, you can sign up for presentation dates in weeks 3-4. Instructor withholds the right to disallow additional presentations requests after the initial calendar is created.

Submit all your backup data, i.e. research notes, presentation notes, outlines, etc.
