Careers in Medical Lab Technology

two lab techsMedical laboratory technicians (MLTs) are skilled workers who play an essential role in the health care field.

These technicians collect, process and analyze blood, cells and other substances. They also monitor and maintain quality control, perform preventive and corrective maintenance of equipment, apply basic scientific principles and learn new techniques.

MLTs work for health care providers, public agencies and private industry, including the fast-growing biotech sector. They are often certified by professional organizations.  

Employment Outlook: 2016-2026

  • The number of jobs for medical and clinical lab technicians is expected to grow by 19.4%

These ten-year projections are calculated by California's Employment Development Department, which collects data about the state's workforce and economic trends.

Medical Lab Technology at De Anza

The Medical Laboratory Technology program at De Anza College prepares students to work in a variety of clinical and research laboratory settings. Courses combine classroom lectures, lab work and practical training to foster the analytical and problem-solving skills required in this field.

students at lab benchStudents can earn a certificate or a degree, and will be eligible to sit for national certification exams offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology and the American Association of Bioanalysts.

The De Anza College MLT Program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Library Sciences. The program is approved by the Laboratory Field Services unit of the California Department of Health Services.

  • Certificate of Achievement - Clinical Laboratory AssistantDetails for Certificate of Achievement - Clinical Laboratory Assistant

    The Clinical Laboratory Assistant Certificate of Achievement is available to students who have successfully completed the four required courses of study. The Certificate of Achievement is a 12-month course of study that prepares students for a career as a Clinical Laboratory Assistant through classroom study. Graduates of the certificate program have a recognized skill set for jobs as a laboratory assistant and opportunity for advancement.

  • Certificate of Achievement-Advanced - Medical Laboratory TechnologyDetails for Certificate of Achievement-Advanced - Medical Laboratory Technology

    The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) Certificate of Achievement-Advanced is available to students who have an associate or higher degree from an accredited U.S. institution or the evaluated equivalent from foreign study. The Certificate of Achievement-Advanced is a 15-month course of study (including one summer) that prepares students for a career as a MLT through classroom study and supervised clinical training. The MLT program provides students with a quality education that complies with the established standards and guidelines of an accredited laboratory training program. Graduates of the certificate program are eligible to sit for a state approved national MLT certification examination.

    The A.A. degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is a 24-month course of study (including summers) that prepares students for a career as a medical laboratory technician through classroom study and supervised clinical training. The MLT Program provides students with a quality education that complies with the established standards and guidelines of an accredited laboratory training program. Graduates of the degree program are eligible to sit for a state-approved national MLT certification examination.
